Marga, this piece was so powerful. As someone who plans not to have children and recently got married, I can totally relate to how you're feeling. As someone who grew up with divorced parents, I constantly asked myself if I ever wanted to have a child when I was growing up, but I decided against it because, after getting married, I realized I'd never want to have any children; however, I am a cat mom, so I definitely know what it's like to relate to the chaos of parenthood. If you and your husband do decide to have children, that is entirely up to both of you. You shouldn't have to feel pressured into having one just because your family is pressuring you to do so. I hope you and your husband enjoy your newly married life, and I wish you all the happiness in the world. I'm looking forward to reading more of your work. 😊
Thank you so much for such a kind and thoughtful comment, Hanna! It’s so comforting to connect with someone who truly gets it. We actually have a dog of our own whom we treat completely as our baby, so I totally understand that fur-parent life! 🐶 Thank you for the sweet wishes for our marriage, it means the world. Wishing you guys all the best too! 🤍
Aww, you’re welcome. I know what you mean. It seems so hard to find people who can relate to not wanting to be a parent, or who aren’t sure whether parenthood is truly for them. I think it’s probably because society once set an expectation that everyone who got married needed to have kids to be happy, but that’s not the case at all. Some people are just happy being married without having kids. And aww, that’s awesome that you had a dog. Being a pet parent is such an amazing experience. You’re welcome for the sweet wishes. I wish you and your husband the best, too.
This was lovely to read. First, your voice is so easy to interact with, which I really appreciated. I sank into it easily. I loved how you discussed the societal pressures surrounding parenting, saying it is responsible for "quietly planting" expectations in our minds. It makes it sound insidious, and in a way it kinda is. It was refreshing to read someone brave enough to stand up to all of it and say, "Enough is enough; let me and my husband live." Great piece!
Thank you for your feedback! It definitely takes a conscious choice to say 'enough' to those expectations, but it's so worth it. Truly appreciate you reading! 🤍
I really admire your honesty and self-awareness. Too many people jump into the parenthood swimming pool because it's expected of them, without fully considering the responsibility of bringing another human being into the world.
The fact that you're asking these questions and thinking so deeply about them tells me you're approaching the decision with the seriousness it deserves. Whether you ultimately choose to have children or not, I think that level of reflection is something to be applauded.
Thank you, Regina. 🥺 It definitely felt a bit scary to put these thoughts out there, but I figured it’s better to ask the hard questions now rather than later. I appreciate you taking the time to read it and share your perspective <333
Oh, this is a poignant piece Marga. Enjoying each moment and phase of life is so important. Things arrive when they are intended❤️
Oh, Pen 🥺 Thank you so much for taking the time to read this! I agree, if it happens, then it happens 🩶
